Charrua’s family model

Since they called it in the beginning

" La Banda Oriental (The Oriental Band), it was discovered and nominated by the Spanish in the year 1516. It was a part of the Viceroyalty of the “Rio de la Plata” (River Plate) from 1776.When the conquerors arrived; different tribes of aboriginal peoples populated

these domain: minuanos, bohanes, guenoas, yaros, and charruas

which were different branches of a big nucleus or nation called

"chana-charruas",

expanding also to the nearby areas (Argentina and Brazil), sharing these territory with the "Guaraníes" ones. The main race in the area that today is Montevideo and his surroundings were the charruas. After the Spanish arrival, they moved towards the Northeast and occupied what today is Rocha, together with the Arachanes tribe. They stood out for their top level; they were excellent canoes constructors and lived by hunting and fishing. Traces of ceramics and carved stones indicate the high inclination for art and craft (Cerritos de indios) .
