Valizas stream |
...From Valizas, across the stream, you can get to one of the local attractions, the " Cerro de la Buena Vista" (Hill of Good Eyesight). The tour (an hour walk across the dunes) until you gets to the highest point. According to history this point was the border between Spanish and Portuguese empires through the years 1750 and 1777. Can you guess where the name comes from? Of course, it has a beautiful panoramic view! From the top you will be able to see the Island "Castillo Grande" , the seashore, Cabo Polonio and Laguna de Castillos. This sight also witnessed many shipwrecks: In 1842 the Portuguese frigate Leopoldina Rosa sank in Valizas. In 1869 the English ship Bessie Hanton also sank in this area. There was a survivor who spent many years living a clandestine life surrounded by many secrets until he became known as Pedro Amonte, an outstanding citizen from the town of Castillos He built libraries and schools. He paid the salary of the first teacher in the area and started a band. He also cured sick people and finally died without revealing his real identity and secrets. |
